    Health and Safety Requirements

    • All entries with a vehicle MUST have adult stewards also known as Wheel Walkers to walk alongside the vehicles to monitor spectator activity around their float during the procession.
    • Wheel Walkers. Class 1 and 2 entries must provide their own Wheel Walkers. The role is to keep people, especially children, away and out of danger from the vehicle and to ensure the driver stops immediately, in the event of danger. (Children may run out to retrieve coins even when vehicles are passing). The Wheel Walkers must wear hi-viz (supplied by the Carnival committee) and have no other role, e.g. not carrying collection buckets.
    • Articulated lorry or tractor and trailer – 6 Wheel Walkers. One on each corner and one on each side of the rear of the traction unit
    • All lorries. 4 Wheel Walkers – one on each corner
    • Cars and vans. 2 Wheel Walkers – one on each front corner
    • We also ask drivers to think of the risk of being struck and distracted by thrown coins. Consider keeping vehicle windows closed, or using netting protection
    • Vehicles must not be wider than 9ft 6 inches or longer than 60ft
    • No one to travel to Marlowe Way on a vehicle or trailer
    • All vehicles must comply with Road Traffic Legislation
    • Drivers of motorised floats must be able to get their vehicles and passengers around this route safely
    • Consider the safety of people carried on the float and how to avoid slips, trips and falls on and from the float.
    • You should consider safety railings on flatbed vehicles
    • Consider the risk presented by any moving parts
    • Consider the safety of the public that the float will pass during the Procession
    • The float should be robust enough that stuff won’t fall off (potentially injuring people) while the float goes up and down hills, around tight corners, or when braking is required
    • Consider any fire risk if combustible material is present (fuel for generators, hay and straw etc.)
    • Consider electrical risk from generators, particularly if 240v cables and connections are used
    • Any gas appliances must carry a Gas Safe certificate – we cannot accept entries without this. Any gas cylinders must be appropriately stored on the vehicle.
    • There may be other risks that your innovative design requires you to consider.
    • Weather – make sure your float will be as safe as possible in all weather conditions.
    • Alcohol is not to be consumed at Marlowe Way or during the procession route. Anyone whom the Carnival Committee or Police deem to be drunk will not be permitted to take part.
    • Insurance – Please ensure your insurance covers you for entry into the Procession
    • All entrants must operate their floats safely, ensuring both the safety of anyone riding on the float and members of the general public
    • Participation of individuals is entirely at their own risk, and the Carnival Committee cannot be held responsible for any loss or injury which might occur
    • No water or other objects are to be thrown by participants
    • No naked flames or pyrotechnics
    • Nothing to be ejected from the float which may compromise the safe enjoyment of the Procession by others
    • First Aiders will be at Marlowe Way until the procession moves off and will then be positioned along the route
    • Toilets will be at Marlowe Way and the bottom of Station Road hill.

Official collecting buckets must be used on the procession route.  These will be supplied to each float/group before the procession starts.  All buckets must be returned with their contents to the official Royal Wootton Bassett Carnival Collectors at the end of the route.

Are there any prizes for the winners?

Yes there are. The winners of each class (6 in total) receive a trophy to look after for a year.
